Eat Fresh

I thought...why not do a post on the topic of my project? SUBWAY!

Subway has had a definite impact on the world of fast food. They paved the way with healthy menus, and in my opinion, they're the only ones that actually have a healthy menu. Their advertising campaign with the infamous Jared, has captured many and really put Subway out there. You can see just how much Subway has affected our media by looking at where you see Subway. By that I mean, there are actual Subway ads in video games nowadays. For those of you that venture in to the world of Counter Strike (an online game where you shoot people on the opposite team), Subway ads can be found on the walls of buildings in certain levels. The ever most popular show, South Park, has even had an episode where meeting Jared was in their plot line, not to mention the two second Subway logo flashing across one of the character's T.V. screen. Today, Subway is everywhere with six grams of fat or less.

Black Friday

So what's there to do after Thanksgiving? Move the belt buckle a few notches down, succumb to the food coma and rest up, because Black Friday is near! Black Friday is the biggest Christmas shopping day of the season. Sales are by the hundreds and the savings are said to be unbelievable. Advertisements are all over the place, and retailers are giddy. Black Friday has been the most profitable day of the year for most retailers.

For the many that venture out on Friday, I praise you. Last year I joined in in the festivities, and let me tell you...that was something I have never seen before. The lines are insane, the people...determined.

Personally, I ignore the sales and go on with my regular Christmas shopping. For me, the lines, the people-packed stores, and the frustration that goes with trying to get that super-on-sale item, just isn't worth the sale. I like to relax and let the calories from Thanksgiving's dishes sink in. Call me lazy, but I'm a person that hates standing in lines, especially while shopping.

So to all the people that are going shopping on Friday...Good luck!

Porn to Reproduce

As we all know, the panda is an endangered animal. The problem with pandas are that they don't... hmmm...how should I put this?...engage in sexual activity as easily as other animals do. So for years experts have been trying to figure out a way to raise birth rates amongst pandas. Well, they've found a way that has been working pretty good for the pandas...Panda porn!!

Yes, that is not a typo. I think this is pretty funny; a panda porn industry actually exists. Don't get me wrong, big ups to the panda community, it's just funny to think that it's come down to watching other pandas get down to reproduce more frequently. According to the article, they say it'd be like when chimps see people smoking and copy them. The new "technique," has proven itself. Birth rates are higher than ever and the survival rate is not far behind.

So all I have to say to the pandas...is good luck and have fun. Enjoy the videos!

Borat

Borat: Humorous or Offensive?

Borat has been blowing up the box office. Many people are rushing to see this foreigner take on America. This is just one of those typical "it's so stupid, it's funny" type of movies. Something about watching him straight up insult numerous people, yet not know what the fuck he's doing is enticing to the crowds. And I am one that has fallen under Borat's charm. I went to see it tonight, and I have to say...I was pretty disappointed once again. I thought it had some real good parts that really made me laugh, but there was a lot of time that I spent sitting, smiling, WAITING to laugh.

So with that, it brings me to the more controversial side. There's a scene where Borat decides to sing a song entitled, "Throw the Jew Down the Well," which has become popular between anti-semites and anti anti-semites.

In this scene, Borat basically bashes Jews, encouraging the audience to join him in the chorus where all he says is "Throw the Jew down the well." The thing I noticed is that at first the crowd was hesitant, and then eventually everyone decides to join in and might I add, with a jolly vigor, almost the same vigor found while people sing Christmas carols.

So that leads me to think about who we are as Americans...Is it that we will go to such lengths just to make an innocent, not knowing any better foreigner feel at home, even if it goes against what we believe in? Or is it that more Americans really feel that way about Jewish people?...or might it be that Americans are a bunch of push overs, that are easily pushed in to believing (or singing in this case) a certain something?

I don't have the answers, but I guess you could just call it...food for thought

Femal Circumcision

In my Muse class we are reading the book "Desert Flower." This book tells the story of a desert nomad that turns international super model! Talk about the "rags to riches" story huh? Well today, we had the pleasure of having Cathleen Miller come and speak to us about how she came to write the book and everything that happened because of the book.

A big issue that came up was female circumcision. The thought of it alone makes me cringe. I never even knew that people still did that, let alone what they did to circumcise a woman, before I read the book. And apparently I'm not the only one that didn't know. In the book, Waris Dirie talks about her experience during her circumcision, which was a part of Somalian culture. The book is very detailed in telling the reader what it felt like to go through such a ritual. I can't and DON'T want to picture what it actually looks like, but Miller emphasized just how bad it is. She told us how one out of every four girls that go through the process dies. And many more die later due to giving child birth. And on top of that the whole process leads to the mutilation of the woman's vagina. And to quote Miller, "Being quite attached to my clitoris, I just couldn't picture going through that!"

Cathleen Miller talked about the influence her book had on everyone. She has sold millions of copies and with that, she raised awareness on the issue. Waris Dirie took all the money she made from this book to build a rescue center in Africa. The issue became so well known that in several countries where it was common, it is now outlawed. After getting a bigger perspective on this whole issue I decided to dedicate today's blog for that and hopefully raise more awareness that will lead to helping out on the whole thing!

Justin's Revenge

I was sitting at my computer wondering what would be worthy of today's blog...

In relation to Allison Zezoney's blog about Kfed and Brit's current media attention, I've just heard Justin Timberlake's song on his new CD entitled "What Goes Around Comes Around." Towards the end of the song he seems to have a direct attack on Britney and her current family status, and he also implies that Britney cheated on him. I found it to be quite amusing...because by the looks of it Britney's dream come true didn't necessarily come out with a happily ever after, and Timberlake is just putting it all in her face like "this is what you coulda had, but now look at you!" I copied a verse on here just so you can get a peek at what Justin had to say:

You spend your nights alone
And he never comes home
And every time you call him
All you get's a busy tone
I heard you found out
That he's doing to you
What you did to me
Ain't that the way it goes

You cheated girl
My heart bleeds girl
So it goes without saying that you left me feeling hurt
Just a classic case
A scenario
Tale as old as time
Girl you got what you deserved

And now you want somebody
To cure the lonely nights
You wish you had somebody
That could come and make it right

All I gotta say is that sucks for Britney Spears. She gets put on blast about her family from every perspective. Baby media mix ups and ex-boyfriends calling her out on their new albums.

What a rip off!

This weekend I watched Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D. And let me say one word...disappointed.

The whole movie was supposed to be in 3D...but what it looked like to me was that it was partly in 3D and considered new and exciting. I was looking forward to being engulfed (literally) in the movie. I guess this was a smart move for Tim Burton. He used his popular and successful movie from over 5 years ago and put a new spin on it; I'm almost certain he's raking in the big bucks on this one too. Almost the whole theater was filled and this wasn't even opening weekend. I'm sure putting a movie in 3D isn't that easy, but Tim Burton wouldn't know either since the whole thing was basically the same, aside from the few snowflakes that drift off the screen. All I gotta say is that it was a total rip off!! I went to go see Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D and all I have to show are these over priced ticket stubs and two pairs of 3D glasses. That was $12.50 well wasted!
